Choosing The Right Pet For You
Friday, August 31st, 2007Adopting your first pet might be one of the most rewarding and important decisions you’ll ever make. The experience can be both an exiting and intimidating. Perhaps you’ve been waiting for just the right moment to bring home your bundle of joy - and now’s the time.
Maybe you’ve always pictured having a fun-loving Golden Retriever or a devilish blue-eyed Siamese cat, or both. There’s nothing wrong with wanting either of these animals, but consider this scenario: You arrive at your local pet shelter glowing with anticipation. A volunteer escorts you to the dog area. Suddenly, 20 dogs are barking for your attention. Uh oh…your heart dives to the pit of your stomach. There isn’t one Golden Retriever.
The shelter volunteer sees your face drop; a frown has replaced your smile. She asks you what’s wrong, and you tell her that the Fido of your dreams isn’t here. The shelter volunteer gently asks if you would be open to another type of dog. You stammer and look down at the freshly bleached floor as you consider this possibility. Hmmm…well why not?
As you digest this new-found possibility you really begin to explore each cage and read the dog descriptions. Suddenly you hear a high pitched whimpering. You turn toward the sound and a sweet dog cautiously looks up at you with pleading brown eyes. You have no idea what kind of dog he is and now you don’t care. After reading his description and spending time with him your realize this dog is perfect for you. You’ve finally found your Fido!
Sure he’s smaller then a Golden, and he’s black and white…not a hint of gold on this guy. He’s a tad shy, five years old, not the teenager you’d hoped for, but he has a big heart and his size and maturity will better suit your condo life.
Sometimes the best things in life aren’t planned. If you open yourself up to a different possibility, you may end up with an animal better suited for you…and you for him.
